Social-Emotional Learning: Introduction to SEL

Many educators find it challenging to meet the social and emotional needs of their students to help them succeed academically. This introductory course provides an insight into social-emotional learning (SEL) and a pathway to the initial steps of integrating SEL into your school or district. You will hone key components as defined by MDE: the five core social and emotional competencies; the research underpinning SEL; and comprehensive benefits and positive outcomes of SEL for staff, students, families, and other stakeholders.This course is part of the Social and Emotional Learning series.

In this course, you will:

  • Define Social and Emotional Learning (SEL),
  • Understand ways in which SEL can increase a student’s capacity to learn,
  • Outline the five competencies of SEL defined by MDE, and
  • Review SEL standards and benchmarks to apply to your school and classroom.
