Technology has made it easier for educational institutions to keep records on their students, but also poses the problem of making it easier for third parties to access that information. For this reason, Congress enacted the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This explanatory course will help you understand the guidelines under FERPA in regards to the rights students, guardians, and the general public have to private records. You as an employee at an educational institution, will also learn the responsibilities involved in having access to student records.
In this course, you will:
- Define the history and purpose of FERPA,
- Identify the rights and responsibilities under the law and how they apply to campus operations, and
- Understand student and parental rights of review and inspection of private records.
