It is necessary that all employees working in K-12, colleges, universities, and trade schools understand the importance of student privacy and have a basic knowledge of what information is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This awareness-level course will provide a general overview of FERPA for secondary and post-secondary school employees in order to maintain secure student records and avoid legal liability. You will understand who is eligible under FERPA, what information can be disclosed and to whom, and student’s rights to view and amend their records.
In this course, you will:
- Recognize the general purpose and history of FERPA,
- Define specific vocabulary and phrases related to FERPA,
- Understand student and parental rights of review and inspection of student records, and
- Identify situations in which information can be disclosed without a student’s written consent.
