This module covers Essential 6 of the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Prekindergarten. The focus of Essential 6 is on research- and standards-aligned writing instruction. This module is part of a series of modules covering the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Prekindergarten.

The Essential Instructional Practices were developed with support from a grant from the Michigan Department of Education by the Early Literacy Task Force, a subcommittee of MAISA’s General Education Leadership Network. The Early Literacy Task Force’s Executive Summary describes the Essentials as “Research-supported instructional practices that can have a positive impact on literacy development. The use of these practices in every classroom, everyday could make a measurable positive difference in the State’s literacy achievement. They should be viewed, as in practice guides in medicine, as presenting a minimum “standard of care” for Michigan’s children.”

Participants in this module will view a series of content presentations which provide detailed information on what is included in each essential and the research that supports them. The content presentations are accompanied by classroom videos that demonstrate each essential in practice. Reflection activities are included to support learners in checking their understanding and applying what they have learned to their own practice. To complete the module, participants must view all presentations and videos and complete all reflection activities.

Although this module can be completed individually, teachers are strongly encouraged to work through this content with the support of their district or ISD literacy coach.
