Reading is more powerful

Self-paced reading with live check-in points

When it comes to reading, book studies provide educators with more structure, social connection, and accountability. The way we design them, these PD experiences strike the perfect balance of synchronous and asynchronous learning. We invite educators to read and reflect at their own pace with live check-in points and small-group discussions. Really, it’s the best of both worlds for introverts and extroverts alike!

Now offering TV series studies… Yep, you read that right!

Alright… hear us out. It’s like a book study, but instead of discussing chapters, you discuss episodes of TV shows relevant to educators. Our first “TV series study” launched in 2022, and the results were fascinating! We explored Season 1 of Ted Lasso and discussed what this series can illuminate about teaching, learning, and the world of education. We plan to offer more TV studies in the future on popular series filled with nuggets of instructional or relational wisdom.

Two pathways

For administrators: Customize a book (or TV) study for your staff

If you’re a school or district leader, you may already have ideas in mind you’d love to offer to staff as a book or TV study. Maybe you’ve even considered hosting one before, but the logistics of running such a group one at scale took more time and energy than you had capacity. We’ve got you covered. Our team routinely works with administrators across Michigan to host facilitated book or TV studies and other PD events.

By customizing a book or TV study, you can…

  • Create opportunities for staff to connect & learn together
  • Offer an engaging, self-paced PD experience without the heavy lift
  • Set the pace and time of your book or TV study to fit staff needs
  • Choose books or shows relevant to your school or district improvement plan
  • Reward staff for learning new things, boosting their skills, and collaborating with peers
For individual educators: Join one of our current studies

If you’re an individual educator interested in joining a book or TV study, we do periodically offer online options for educators all across Michigan. Join us for an upcoming study, or sign up for notifications, so you don’t miss out on the next one!

By participating in a book or TV study, you will…

  • Get excited about learning something new
  • Connect with other educators across the state
  • Read/watch and reflect at your own pace
  • Swap insights & strategies with peers
  • Earn SCECHs for reading/watching!

Limited Course Capacity

We’re sorry to inform you that we have reached capacity for several of our Semester 1 and Trimester 1 courses. You’ll notice when attempting to enroll students in our Student Learning Portal that some courses are unavailable. While we are no longer accepting new enrollments for these courses at this time, many courses continue to remain open for enrollment.

With many students across the state 100% remote, demand for our online courses is greater than ever before. Because every course we offer is taught by a Michigan-certified teacher, this high volume of enrollments has created capacity issues for our teachers who provide each and every student with individual feedback.

While the Michigan Virtual team anticipated and planned for significant increases in student enrollments this Fall, the increased demand we’ve experienced has been unprecedented. As a result, we are taking steps to hire even more part-and full-time teachers to support larger numbers of student enrollments for Semester 2 as well as for Trimester 2 and 3.

For schools that still need online learning options this year, please fill out the form at the bottom of our virtual pathways page to meet with someone to discuss other solutions. While some of our teacher-led courses are full, we may still have the capacity to help you in upcoming terms or can discuss timing to implement a whole-school or collaborative program in which local teachers from your school/district use our online course content to teach students. We also have free course content and resources available for you to use.

We know this is an incredibly stressful time for all, and we’re sorry if the courses you’re looking for are unavailable. We never want to turn away a student who wants to learn from us. Our top concern, however, is student success, and we have a policy to not take on additional enrollments if we cannot guarantee that all students will have a quality online learning experience.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the unusually high volume of enrollments we are receiving.
