Grading Window and Feedback
Instructors will score and provide feedback on student submitted assignments within 72 hours (96 hours for ELA and AP courses) of submission on typical business days, Monday-Friday.
Discussion-Based Assessments**
Discussion-based assessments (DBAs) MUST be scheduled in advance with the instructor, according to the directions the instructor has posted in class. DBAs may not be available in the last three days before the end date.
- We strongly encourage students to avoid waiting until a deadline to schedule their DBAs as peak submission times can impact instructor availability.
Resubmission of Assignments**
- Students may resubmit assignments (turned in in good faith*) to demonstrate mastery. Mastery is defined as earning 80% or better.
- Assignment must be resubmitted within 2 weeks of the date it was graded.
- Tests and quizzes are not part of the resubmission policy, though there may be exceptions in Essentials courses.
- Resubmissions of assignments are not available in the last week of the term without documented teacher approval (does not apply to verifiable technical issues).
Exam Passwords and Password Distribution
- Many Michigan Virtual exams are password protected to ensure the integrity of the course material.
- Passwords are available to mentors in advance of the exam by utilizing the Insights Portal in Brightspace.
- Mentors are responsible for providing the password to the student.
- Passwords may be provided to a student in an emergency situation, but the mentor will be notified that a password has been provided.
- Schools may indicate that they do not want instructors to share passwords with students under any circumstances by contacting Michigan Virtual Customer Care.
Submission of Final Scores and Course Completion
- Due to scheduled data transfers from Learning Management System (LMS) grade centers to the student Learning Portal (SLP), it may require up to 24 hours for scores in the SLP to update scores in certain LMS.
- End of term final scores will be finalized and submitted within 5 business days after the student’s end date.
- Requests for early submission of final scores
- Michigan Virtual cannot honor last minute requests for early final scores due to the considerations listed (same day or next day requests)
- End Date Expectations
- Once a final score is submitted, students and mentors no longer have access to the course in the LMS.
Submission of Student Work
- All work to be considered for official grading purposes must be submitted in and accessible in the Learning Management System.
- No email or message submissions will be considered at any time.
- Items submitted after the student’s end date will not be included in the final score.
- This includes blank and/or empty assignment submissions (may not be used as a time/space holder), assignment formats the instructor cannot open, or documents the instructor does not have permission to view, including Google Docs or other cloud based documents.
Grading or Final Score Disputes
This policy applies to disputes regarding a student’s final score at the end of a term.
Questions about a student’s score on an individual assignment should be directed to the instructor while the course is currently in session.
If the course has ended, questions about individual assignment scores should be directed to Michigan Virtual Customer Care.
Michigan Virtual will not honor requests for alternate teacher reviews of student work.
Any final course scores in dispute must be addressed, in writing, by the course enroller (if the student is enrolled through a school, the school must make the request) to the Michigan Virtual Customer Care team within 60 calendar days of the final score submission to be considered for review.
The following must be submitted to be considered for review:
Identification of Grading Dispute
A brief explanation and description of the grading dispute must be submitted. It should include the student’s name, course title, teacher name, and the assignments or assessments in question.
Documentation
Only the following forms of documentation will be accepted:Original Brightspace submission receipts, forwarded directly from the enroller's or school's email at the time of dispute submission.
Original emails relevant to the dispute (such as correspondence with the instructor), forwarded directly from the account that received them at the time of dispute submission. Screenshots or images of emails will not be accepted; only forwarded originals will be accepted.
Other supporting documentation must include verifiable dates and timestamps that can be corroborated by Michigan Virtual email, phone, or other records.
Verification of Documentation
Documentation submitted in support of a dispute will be verified against Michigan Virtual's internal system records, including LMS submission logs, timestamps, and grade records. Externally submitted documentation (screenshots, emails, or messages) may support a claim but will not be considered sufficient on its own if it cannot be corroborated by internal system data. Michigan Virtual reserves the right to deny a request if the submitted documentation cannot be independently verified.
Submission of falsified, altered, or fabricated documentation will result in immediate denial of the request and may result in additional consequences, including restrictions on future dispute submissions or the inability to enroll in future courses at Michigan Virtual.
Work must have a verifiable timestamp (such as a Brightspace submission receipt) confirming it was submitted before the end of the course.
Follow Up
Michigan Virtual will notify the enroller of the outcome of the review within 5 business days of receiving a complete submission.
