About This Course

This course is the first in a two-course sequence for second-year Japanese language learners. Lessons develop language skills for everyday social interactions—shopping, ordering food, discussing weather, and communicating needs—while exploring contemporary Japanese culture to support culturally relevant communication. This course introduces Kanji (Chinese Characters) alongside continued use of Hiragana and Katakana; Romaji (English script) is not used. Students must be able to read and write Hiragana and have developing proficiency in Katakana characters prior to enrolling in this course. Audio and video materials featuring native Japanese speakers support interpersonal and interpretive fluency. Students will use online resources, a microphone or webcam capable of recording audio, and the Brightspace Video Notes tool to record and submit performance-based assignments. This course targets the Novice Level of the MI World Language Standards and Benchmarks.
