Michigan Virtual and MDE Align Resources to Continue Responsible AI Integration Statewide
On May 7, 2026, the Michigan Department of Education reached a significant milestone with the formal release of the Artificial Intelligence Guidance Resource Release. This release, which includes the MDE Comprehensive AI Guide for Districts, establishes a unified, Michigan-specific approach to AI that is implementation-focused and literacy-driven.
The MDE has explicitly identified Michigan Virtual as a key partner in this initiative. This collaboration creates a statewide alignment between the new state guidance and Michigan Virtual’s AI Planning Guide, which has served schools since August 2023.
Since its inception in October 2023, the AI Lab at Michigan Virtual has been dedicated to supporting schools through this transition, emphasizing that AI implementation is about enhancing uniquely human talents rather than just adopting new technology. Over the past 18 months, the AI Lab has achieved significant statewide reach:
25,000+ Participants: Reached through more than 500 events focused on AI literacy, instructional frameworks, and practical application
150+ Districts: Provided with direct AI integration support and training programs
Statewide Collaboration: Formed the Michigan Statewide AI Workgroup, comprising 17 Michigan education associations
AI Summits: Hosted three successful AI Summits with over 1,700 total participants
While MDE’s AI Comprehensive AI Guide and Michigan Virtual’s AI Planning Guide work in tandem, they serve distinct and complementary roles for school leaders.
The MDE Guide provides overarching administrative guidelines to help districts establish safe, equitable, and responsible practices by defining core concepts of AI literacy, including algorithms, data, and computational thinking. The Guide sets a framework for transparency, data privacy (FERPA/COPPA), and instructional guardrails. MDE integrates AI readiness into the Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process (MICIP) cycles, and the Guide features a 52-week phase-based implementation timeline to guide districts toward readiness.
Michigan Virtual’s AI Planning Guide serves as a practical integration playbook that aligns with the state’s broader guidance. It provides a manual for teaching AI and leveraging instructional shifts, ultimately helping educators transition into roles as facilitators and mentors while empowering students to become active agents of their own learning. The AI Planning Guide features an AI Risk Assessment and a list of domain-specific Common Pitfalls derived from research and partner case studies. Beyond instructional guidance, Michigan Virtual supports implementation through operational strategies for human resources and facilities management. These resources are bolstered by role-specific guides for administrators, teachers, and students, a student-focused AI literacy video series, and a comprehensive AI Integration Framework.
The release of MDE’s guidance is timely because Michigan schools are already navigating AI every day. While some districts are several years into creating staff guidance and piloting classroom use, many others are just beginning. While the work has already begun, this collective statewide initiative provides the spark and structure needed for long-term success. The momentum generated by this unified front helps establish that responsible AI integration remains a cornerstone of Michigan’s teaching and learning practices. Michigan’s task is to translate this statewide energy into immediate, responsible support for students, fulfilling a vision to prepare them as the architects and leaders of today and Michigan’s future.
