Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Pre-K Essential 1

Michigan is taking action to turn around the substandard literacy trends the state has seen in recent years. This course outlines the foundations and Essential 1 in the series of research-supported practices designed to have a positive impact on literacy development in Pre-K. You will focus on intentional use of literary artifacts throughout the classroom. You will also become familiar with the current state of early literacy performance as well as research and methods that uphold this essential. This course is part of the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy, Pre-K series.

In this course, you will:

  • Recognize the state of Early Literacy in Michigan and your role in the improvement process,
  • Assess your current knowledge of Early Literacy teaching methods, especially this essential practice,
  • Discover how greater accessibility to reading and writing artifacts in the Pre-K classroom will encourage development, and
  • View classroom videos that demonstrate the essential in practice.
