Blackboard: Unable to View Course Content

Introduction:

Students may encounter issues viewing course content within the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). This process describes three possible fixes a student can try to resolve the problem.

Details:

Fix 1: Popup Blockers

Popup blockers will sometimes prevent the window from appearing. Popup blockers are contained in browser settings, firewall settings, and are even contained in most browser tool bars. You will want to ensure that all possible popup blockers are turned off.

Internet Explorer
  1. First select Tools button and choose Pop-up Blocker.
  2. Then click Turn off Pop-up Blocker.
Firefox
  1. Select Options from the Tools menu (or Preferences if using Mac).
  2. Then select the Content tab. C
  3. Finally click the Block pop-up windows checkbox.
Safari
  1. Click the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window (click Safari menu for Mac).
  2. Then deselect the Block Pop-up Windows option from the drop-down menu.
Note: You may also use, Ctrl+Shift+K keys for Windows and Cmd+Shift+K keys for Mac.

Fix 2: Browser Plugins

Internet Explorer
  1. In order to see which plugins are installed in Internet Explorer, you can simply click on the gear icon on the toolbar and select Manage add-ons.
Firefox
  1. First access the list of plugins by clicking Tools, Add-ons, and then selecting Plug-ins on the left side of the screen.
  2. Adjust the plug-in settings.
Safari
  1. Navigate to the folder that holds the plugin (/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/) and there you can delete it from the folder. See the Apple support tip for Safari 6 here for more details.

Fix 3: Compatibility Mode

Some browsers have a “compatibility mode” that must be turned on for all the content to be displayed properly.

Internet Explorer

The new Internet Explorer (version 10) has such a mode, and it might be what is preventing the content from loading correctly.

  1. Turn on Compatibility View
    1. See if the Compatibility View button appears in the Address bar (if you don’t see the button, there’s no need to turn on Compatibility View.
    2. Tap or click the Compatibility View button to display the site in Compatibility View
  2. Clear the list of Compatibility View sites
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Press the Alt key to display the Menu bar (or right-click the Address bar and then select Menu bar).
    3. Tap or click Tools, and then tap or click Delete Browsing History.
    4. In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, tap or click the History check box, and then tap or click Delete.
Chrome
  1. The shield icon will appear in the address bar when mixed content is blocked. To display the mixed content, click the shield icon, then click Load anyway or Load unsafe script.
  2. Next repeat this for each page you would like to load where the shield icon appears.
Firefox
  1. A shield icon will appear in the address bar (as shown below) when mixed content is blocked.
  2. To display the mixed content, click the shield icon, then click Disable Protection on This Page in the menu that appears.
  3. Next repeat this for each page you would like to load where the shield icon appears.
