Micro-credentials: Understanding Micro-credentials

Micro-credentials are a certification system that awards a digital badge for proficient demonstration of a competency.  It serves as an alternative to the SCECH model, which awards participants for their attendance.

Participants are evaluated based on their ability to do the work, rather than being evaluated based on exposure to a particular concept or idea. Micro-credentials are:

  • Competency-based
  • Personalized
  • Job-embedded
  • Research-based
  • Shareable
  • Self-directed

Therefore a micro-credential learning experience is designed differently from a traditional course. It is intentionally designed to support the learners’ personalized learning needs.

As a product of their learning experience, each learner will author several artifacts. Learners have the opportunity to openly explore and utilize any or all provided resources as they develop evidence artifacts. The only requirement is to submit evidence that successfully meets the criteria, which will be awarded with the micro-credential.
