Blackboard: Theme Changes

This summer, students will notice a change in appearance of courses within the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). In addition to the color and background modifications, there are a few additional changes to the LMS that have been outlined below.
An image of the existing Blackboard theme is shown with teal and lime green page colors. The new theme is shown just below with proper dark gray color contrast.

The Mobile Experience

  1. When a student logs in to Blackboard on a mobile device or tablet the course menu and control panel change position to stay visible.
  2. Smaller screens will alter the view by stacking modules and tool tiles rather than displaying them side by side in the desktop view.
  3. Please note that not all tools and workflows have been optimized for mobile use.

  1. The new theme adheres to the WCAG 2.0 principles and accessibility guidelines for structure, color contrast, and navigation.
  2. There is now a visible keyboard focus which has been built directly into the theme.
  3. Best practices for the definition of buttons and menus used for navigation have been added.
  4. To improve page structure and assist users with screen readers in navigating page elements, ARIA landmarks have been added in courses to the course menu and the content area.
For additional information, please see the Michigan Virtual Web Accessibility Policy, Blackboard’s Support for Accessibility and/or Blackboard’s Commitment to Accessibility.

Browser Impact

  1. Students should run the Browser Checker to see whether Blackboard Learn supports their browser version.
  2. Modern mobile browsers are generally considered compatible when using the new theme and mobile-compatible content. Please note that not all tools and workflows have been optimized for mobile use.
